Glossary

This page contains a glossary of terms used in our Casa Chuparrosa web site. Please understand that some words may be used slightly differently for our home as apposed to the 'normal' use of the word.

Bodega: Cellar, wine cellar, warehouse, or ship's hold. Casa Chuparrosa has three bodegas or 'cellars': The lady's bodega, man's bodega and gardener's bodega.

Casa: House or home.

Casita: Little house or little home. Here it refers specifically to the Master Suite - the Casita, our little home away from home.

Chuparrosa: Mexican for Hummingbird. Chupar is to suck and rosa is a rose - so literally chuparrosa is to suck a rose - exactly what a hummingbird does! (Colibri is the Spanish word for hummingbird.) We have named our home Casa Chuparrosa not only because of the abundance of hummingbirds outside, but also because of the collection of hummingbirds inside our home. (No live ones, just replicas.)
Did you know that chuparrosas are considered good luck, much like a rabbit's foot? You'll find lots of Mexican ladies carry a dried chuparrosa wrapped in silk in their purse. The ruby throated hummingbirds seem to be the most popular.

Mi casa es tu casa: My house is your house. Now you may have heard this said as "mi casa es su casa". Su is the formal version of your, where tu is the informal version of your. So our way is friendly - 'my house is your house, friend' - as apposed to 'my house is your house, sir'.
Be on the lookout for our sign above the tapa bar that invites 'mi casa es tu casa'. We only invite friends into our home.

Palapa: Traditional palm frond type roof covering.

San Diego: America's finest city. Just check with the Chamber of Commerce or the City of San Diego.

Tapa Bar: Tapa means Hors D'oeuvre or appetizer. A tapa bar is an appetizer bar. Our tapa bar is free standing and located in front of the wet bar. The tapa bar is an antique imported from Argentina and has been wired with power for the included microwave oven.
