The FOUNTAIN
for Bob & Posy

We are currently constructing a fountain in the entry of our home. The tree that was originally in this location was removed for several reasons: It was a very dirty tree, creating little fig like fruits that were not edible but made quite a mess. It was also tipping over because the ground is so hard that the roots of the tree were all on the surface of the ground. And finally, it created so much shade that we couldn't grow any grass under the tree. So out it came.

The pictures above show where the tree was located. The first two photos are with the tree and the last is without the tree. Although it's not too easy to see the tree that was removed for all the other foliage that is around, you can certainly see the house better on the picture without the tree. (Click the picture for a larger version.)

Our next chore was to find something to replace the tree and make a center piece to the entry. Posy thought that a fountain would be great. We looked in lots of books and at lots of pictures as to what kind of fountain we would like. It turned out that we actually have a water color painting hanging on the wall that we really like. Posy has had it  for many years and her family had gotten it when they were in Mexico on a trip. It's just what Posy wanted for the entry.

So once we had the design generally, we needed to find a fountain to install. When we started shopping, we found an auction that we had been to before that usually had just marble and stone tiles, but this time they also listed some stone fountains. So as we both really enjoy auctions, off we went in search of our entry fountain. We found one that seemed to just fit our needs. The following picture show the Base, Mid Section and Top Level of the fountain in pieces. When it is totally assembled it stands just six feet tall.

The original design of the fountain lets the water collect in the Mid Section dish above and then circulates from the top. However, we have decided to put the entire fountain into a pool and let the water spill from the Mid Section dish to the pool. Pace has started the construction of the pool along with the necessary plumbing to allow us to install a pump off to the side. Here's a few of the construction pictures as of October 15, 2000.

The first thing Pace needed to do was to dig a form for the base of the fountain and add re-bar and plumbing.

Next Pace got to play in the mud!

Pace said that I could play too, but only a little. So he gave me a hoe and patted me on the head and said "go for it".

Notice that Pace is "thinking" real hard here to make sure everything is right!

The last photo in this group is the pool  for the fountain as of October 15, 2000..

Here's some more photos as of October 21, 2000

A couple with Posy

We are also adding tile to the planter near the fountain

Here's a continuation of fountain pictures as of November 5, 2000. As you can see the actual fountain is now complete and we have water running in the system. The only thing left to complete is the installation of the deck tiles around the 'pool'.

Here's a close-up of the pump and plumbing:

Well, that's it for now. I'll update this site as time goes by. So check back often. We are almost complete with the fountain and are going to be concentrating on the master bath. Check it out at: Master Bathroom.
