We found out last Friday that Posy has cancer.
We went to see the oncologist today. He is 95% sure that Posy has Peritoneal Cancer. (Adenocarcinoma is a generic name for many kinds of cancers that are associated with the lining of many different organs.) He said that she is in stage 4 (out of 5) cancer. The previous CT Scan shows evidence of cancer on the intestins, right lung and peritoneam. She also has liquid around the right lung and lower abdomine (2.5 liters were drained last week) caused by the cancer. He has taken two more marker tests to make sure that the cancer is not something else. Posy will also be doing the colonoscopy on Tuesday to prove that it is not colon cancer. Once that is done, on Wednesday, she will go in for chemotherapy. The first of 6 sessions each 4 weeks apart (surgery is not an option). The type of therapy is taxol and platinum. This combination is said to work well for this type of cancer. Somewhere between 75% to 80% of the patients with this type of cancer survive more than 5 years with these drugs. We are hoping that it does not turn out to be colon cancer, as the treatment is different and the prognosis is not at all good for that type.
The chemo comes with the standard side effects of hair loss, nausea, decreased immune system, low white cell counts, etc. So we will be taking extra care of other illnesses. Posy really hates the idea of loosing her hair, however.
