Posy's Cancer Report
October 4, 2000

Hi Again,

Posy did her chemo thing yesterday. The blood levels had returned to a sufficient level to have the Gemzar administered.

We received the report on the last CA-125 taken on Friday. It is up to 159 (from the previous of 148). The doctor indicated that even though it is up, it is not significant. (Worry if it goes to 500 or 1000 but not up by only 11 points.) So we'll wait a couple a weeks and do another to see how the Gemzar is doing. (It is a slow reacting regiment, so this is not unexpected.)

By simple listening, it sounded like Posy's lung may be full again, however the doctor indicated that as long as there is no discomfort, there is no need to drain it. Posy opted to wait for now.

Posy is tired and sometimes short of breath, but we think this is mostly attributed to her very low red blood count (the actual count is 9.5 and it should be in a range of 12 to 16). Because the Epogen has not increased the red count much (but it has kept it steady), both the doctor and Posy have decided to try a blood transfusion (Posy gets the blood, not the doctor). This should increase her blood count and may help with the lack of energy. She is scheduled to have the transfusion on Friday. They will give her two units of blood and it should take about 5 hours to dispense. Because of the time involved, they have given her a bed in the day treatment area rather than a lounge chair. We hope that this will help with her energy level and may also help with the edema (swollen ankles and excess water) that she is currently also experiencing.

Well, that's all for now. Things are not all bad, just kind of level right now. I'll keep you all informed.

Thanks for hanging in there.

Bob (& Posy)
